restaurant recs near LAX

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 11:18 PM
Hi -

I have a friend from college coming to LA for a work conference - I'm going to visit her on the Sunday night of her trip and was hoping for restaurant recommendations near her hotel - the Westin LAX.

Ideally - mid-price point (around $25-ish per meal) and close-ish to the hotel. She had mentioned sushi (she's visiting from NC) - and I was thinking maybe something Cal-Asian or seafood fusion.... but really I don't know the area that well so I'm open to suggestions.

I was thinking of Cafe del Rey if anyone has been there (chowhound had some good things to say about it) - really looking for a place we can get a good meal, a few drinks and have a mini-reunion.

thanks!

Animal-loving musicians?

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
A good friend of mine is in a band called The Kris Special, and he's starting to work on putting together a benefit show for a local animal rescue. (They're still deciding which one.) Do any of you know of bands/musicians who might be interested in participating?

He already has a couple onboard, but he's hoping to find a more well-known band so that he can get a bigger/nicer venue and accommodate more people - any names, links, or contact information would be great to pass on to him. Thank you!

P.S. The Kris Special is having a free show 1/18 at Spaceland, 9pm. You should come! :)

Extra-small men's clothes?

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
My boyfriend is about 5'8" with a slender frame, and most "small" size shirts hang off of him and look really baggy.

For reference: An American Apparel small is just about right, though their extra-small works for him as well; however, he prefers dress-shirts to t-shirts (and dressier clothes in general), so that only helps so much. Small size Aeropostale dress shirts are a bit better than most but they're still too big, and they don't carry an extra-small (which would be perfect). I've heard that H&M has extra small men's shirts..?

Additionally, we're both poor as well as kind of clumsy and absentminded; so it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend $50+ on a shirt he may dribble coffee on a couple weeks later. (Maybe if it was dark-colored..?) I thrift store and Target-clearance sale all my clothes but my size is easy to find; we can't find ANYTHING for him at thrift stores, beyond the very occasional gender-neutral-looking lady's jacket, etc.

Any ideas? And thank you!

I lost my favorite hat in a car crash.

I managed to save the feathers, but I have no idea where to go to find a purple felt pimp hat to replace it. The original was a gift, so I'm rather at a loss. Does anyone know where I could go that even might carry something like this?

Extra ticket

  • Jan. 4th, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Five of us were going to see Frosty the Snow Manilow at the Falcon Theatre this Saturday, January 9th, at 4:00 p.m. One had to drop out so I have an extra ticket. Face value is $42.50. Row 6 center seats.

If someone would like to buy the extra ticket from me, please contact me through the private messaging system on LJ.

If you've never seen the Troubadors perform, you are in for a real treat and must be prepared to laugh like crazy. Singing, dancing, comedy... they are wonderful and always get rave reviews. I believe this run is sold out. The Troubies always do a story/music mash-up; prior Troubie shows I have seen include As U2 Like It (mixture of Shakespeare and the music of U2), and Oedipus the King, Mama (mixture of Oediupus Rex and the music of Elvis). The Falcon is a very nice, small theatre at 4252 Riverside Drive in Burbank, owned by Gary Marshall, with quality productions.

a little advice

  • Jan. 2nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
My neighbor had to kick her roommate out for not paying rent and now needs money. Can she sell the ex-roomies things? ( I ask this here in case you all know about the renter's rights and such in LA)

The details )

So, any advice??

*names have been changed to protect.. well you know..

MInd you, please don't yell at me for trying to help an older woman who is struggling with these economic times. Legal or not, the bottom line is that something has to happen. If there are other avenues, please share. I myself will not be selling anything nor taking part in trying to get this money back. I just want to help my neighbor by asking you folks in the LA community if you have been in similar experiences..

Thanks in advance.

Mosaic Art Supply

  • Jan. 1st, 2010 at 1:24 PM
Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone here does mosaic work and if so, where in person, in Los Angeles do you buy your supplies from?

Also, which are your favorite art stores?

Thanks in advance!
